My daughter taking zantac, she has had no crying spells since starting on it and eats and sleeps better. It’s not perfect, so i hope don’t run into the problem of it not working at all anymore!

sorry i can’t help you more.

zantac did not work for mine either. prevacid works great for us tho. , and tasted so much better!

my gi specialist had us put cereal in the bottle, to thinken it up. the thicker formula makes it harder for them to reflux.

ETA–i was afraid he was going to balloon up in weight, but he didn’t and the combination of the 2 made him a whole new kid.
they also said to keep him upright for a good amount of time after, or at least in a bouncy seat, or whatever, just not laying flat.
ETA x 2—we used the dr. brown’s bottles too, those are awesome AWESOME bottles for reflux babies, a tad more expensive, but they really work great.

have you tried adding a little cereal in his bottle at night??? my son had reflux really bad and thats what childrens hospital ahd me do along with zantac 2 x’s a day. i was adding 2 tablespoons for 6 oz of formula. i used avent botttles and they make a special nipple for thicker liquids. alos make sure your keeping in an upright position for 30 mins after each feeding. If hes 4 months old you can start spooning him some cereal also and this might help

I personally am not a fan of giving such a young child synthetic medicines, however, have used milacon drops for both my sons when they were gassy and such.

I found that FENNEL seeds work better. You can buy them at a health food store. Prepare them as you would coffee in a coffee maker. Let cool and add one part water to two parts fennel seed “tea” in a bottle. You could add a SMALL sprinkle of sugar for taste. Give your baby a few sips of this after eating. It aids digestion and helps stop gas and spitting up. My oldest son had severe colic at 3 weeks old. My mother prepared this after every bottle and we never had a problem with him having gas, excess spitting up or colic. He was never constipated either.

Fennel seed is all natural. No synthetic ingredients. No caffeine.
    Good luck!

Yahoo Answers is not best used as a substitute for professional medical advice. Especially considering the very young nature of the patient.

    That said. . . .

Zantac is a Histamine-2 blocker class of medication. Prevacid is s Proton Pump inhibitor. Since it functions on a different mechanism, it may react differently. That said, it is not classified as a medication for those less than 1 year old. That said, your Pediatrician may find the benefits are worth off label prescribing.

While medication may provide relief, there are other alternative actions.

You do not say if you use formula (and type/brand) or breast feed. Sometimes changing from one or the other helps. Different formulas can also make a difference. Also is there any reason – like prematurity- for the GERD? THis would be the number 1 thing on my mind. Treat the cause not the symptoms. Positional feeding can help. At 4 months, some cereal may be appropriate, but again, ask the doc, as the underlying cause of the GERD may be worsened by adding solids too early.

Every baby is unique and obtaining info from group sources like Yahoo helps confirm that you have others sharing your situation but are no substitute for pediatric medical advice. I think if you inform your doctor the Zantac is not producing the results you want, then a trial of Prevacid (or other PPI) may be warranted.
