Acid Reflux Medicines -Which One’s Work

Friday, November 6th, 2009

There are numerous medications available for acid reflux but which medication really works Acid reflux medicines are usually combined with GERD diet to complete the treatment. Antacids remain the medicine of choice even if potent medications are developed for the treatment of acid reflux. Based on medical studies, this medicine neutralizes the acid in the stomach to stop reflux of acid. Although this is the popular choice, the action of antacid is brief and thus requires another medication to help prolong the action. Antacids are removed from the empty stomach much faster, usually in less than one hour and the acid then form again. In order to have a better effect take the medicine an hour after meals or before acid reflux begins after a meal. To make the antacid stay longer inside the stomach and become effective longer, it is best to take the medicine after meal. Antacids as acid reflux medicines can be an aluminium-, magnesium- or calcium-based. The calcium based antacid stimulates the release of gastrin from the stomach and duodenum. The hormone that is responsible for the stimulation of acid secretion in the stomach is gastrin. After the direct acid-neutralizing effect of calcium carbonate, the secretion of acid rebounds. Overproduction of acid is the result of the release of gastrin. Another medication used in the treatment of GERD is the histamine antagonists. Histamine stimulates acid production by the stomach. Once released in the stomach, the medicine attaches to receptors on the stomachâs cells and stimulates the cells to create acid. Histamine antagonist blocks the histamine receptor and prevents it from stimulating the acid-producing cells. Since it is particularly essential for the stimulation of acid after meals, histamine is best if taken thirty minutes before meals. This is because the H2 antagonists will be at peak level in the body after the meal when acid is producing in the stomach. It can also be taken before bedtime to stop the production of acid during nighttime. Proton pump inhibitor is an acid reflux medicine that blocks the secretion of acid into the stomach by the acid-secreting cells. It shuts off the production of acid more completely and for a longer period of time making it more effective against H2 antagonist. Another advantage of proton pump inhibitor is that it also protects the esophagus from acid so that esophageal inflammation can heal. Proton pump inhibitor is best when taken after meals. If taken before meal, it is at peak levels in the body after the meal when the acid is being made. At present there are many medications available for acid reflux and all of them work differently depending on how a person takes it. The effectiveness of the medicines depends on the activity of the acid in the stomach, that is why the acid reflux medicines are taken either with full stomach or before meal. All of the mentioned medicines as well as the natural medicines work in acid reflux. It only differs on how the medicines work with the acid and how long its effect takes place.

Acid Reflux Medications – Do They Work?

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Drugs and medication for acid reflux are readily available. They look at the ads, some medications for heartburn are sold over the counter, and most doctors to prescribe them happy with the promise of immediate termination of the crippling pain of acid reflux. After all, you're probably wondering medication for acid reflux, in any effective way when it comes to fixing the real cause of acid reflux disease and justified the temporary relief of side effects.
Heartburn, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs when the valve in the esophagus (the LES or lower esophageal sphincter) becomes weak and instead of acting in one direction, and the flow of stomach contents in 'esophagus. Normally, after glutition, the LES opens to allow food in the stomach before closing to prevent the return of acid into the esophagus. Acid reflux acid reflux often this is seen as a burning sensation called heartburn. Therefore, patients with acid reflux often experience a burning sensation, especially under the breastbone, often at night.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a potentially deadly disease that requires diagnosis and treatment. If unattended, GERD can hardly corrode the lining of the esophagus, causing inflammation and possibly even more esophageal cancer. Attendant symptoms of GERD are persistent heartburn can be distracting and painful enough to ruin your daily activities and seriously impair the esophagus.
Drugs and reflux are not necessarily the remedy of choice, even if it seems more accessible treatment for heartburn. There are four main classes of drugs for use with GERD:
1. Antacids in force to neutralize the acid in the esophagus and to do this until a few hours. They can be purchased in various formats, such as rubber, liquid, or tablets, etc..
2. Stomach contents of alginate encapsulation and reduce reflux.
3. H2-receptor antagonists mimic the production of stomach acid in order to put a blockade of the stomach. Are 30 and 60 minutes to start working and then you can produce this effect up to 12 hours.
4. IBP (proton pump inhibitors) inhibit the release of acid in the stomach by acting on cells in the stomach.
These drugs have a common element, but differ in the way they work, and for its duration and the effect of:
1. Are temporary. Acid reflux is complicated, being created by a group of environmental factors, lifestyle and diet. However, most drugs are focused on the treatment of acid reflux causes short-term immediate acid reflux, so only temporary relief and ignore the real causes of heartburn.
2. The use of these drugs for a long time can cause side effects. Prolonged use of antacids can worsen the long-term damage from stomach acid reflux acid is necessary for good digestion and immunity, and taking antacids continually interferes with these processes. PPI therapy is usually not more good than bad side effects. Its most common side effects include headaches and diarrhea, IPP also been associated with osteoporosis.
Most medications for acid reflux will not only bring temporary relief, but with many side effects. This is because conventional drug therapy for heartburn is based on the finding that, compared with the holistic approach does not concern the body, but is aimed only at eliminating the symptoms of the disease. Alternative treatments for acid reflux, such as homeopathic remedies, changes in lifestyle and diet, herbal remedies, and detoxification, so as to cause acid reflux in a safe and effective for preventing relapse.
