Healthy Measurements for Avoiding Gerd

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

For more than 18 000 adults and children who have GERD Mayo Clinic has improved the treatment. By using a team approach Mayo specialized in the medical endoscopic and surgical treatment of GERD. A treatment team for GERD is composed by an gastroenterologist, chest (thoracic) surgeon, pulmonary specialist, ear nose and throat (ENT) specialist and radiologist.

For treating children, pediatric specialists are indicated. Leading-edge research are conducted by a team of specialists. In screening and diagnostic Mayo offers the most performed services for GERD. Esophagoscopy, barium swallow, cardiac evaluation, esophageal manometry and esophageal pH monitoring are tests given to the patients. Also for diagnose GERD Mayo is used.

The most appropriate approach for there patients Mayo Clinic is an important one. Treatments include medication, endoscopic treatment or surgery. Treatments like sewing, burning or injections are approved by the Mayo Clinic. The endoscopic treatments are investigated by the Mayo physicians. For the repair the hiatal hernia laparoscopic surgery is used.

In a given condition in which stomach acids or bile salts back into the esophagus producing a burning sensation behind a breastbone and esophageal irritation or inflammation it is in case of GERD, also known as acid reflux. The acid is transported to the stomach by a circular band of muscle called esophageal sphincter (LES). The heartburn is caused by the stomach acid. The sensation of heartburn can be exacerbated by the presence of a hiatal hernia.

About 17 millions Americans suffer at heartburn and other symptoms of GERD. In many cases people can be treated with a proper combination of lifestyle, changes and medication and in others a surgical intervention is necessary to eliminate the symptoms and to prevent damages to the esophagus.

Why Having a Healthy pH Level Can Cure Your GERD

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Before I go any further, it would best help to define what pH is.

The pH (stands for potential of Hydrogen) is a measure of how acid or alkaline a solution is. It is a measure of its hydrogen ion concentration. If you have a high pH reading, then a solution would be more alkaline or oxygen-rich. On the other hand, the lower the pH reading, the more acidic or oxygen-deprived a solution would become. The values of pH range rom 0 to 14, with the middle (7. 0) being neutral. Anything greater than the midpoint is alkaline, and anything lesser than that is acidic.

So what does this have to do with your GERD or Acid Reflux Your blood is slightly alkaline (pH of 7. 35 to 7. 45). Take careful notice of this – if your blood pH goes below 6. 8 or above 7. 8, your cells stop functioning and the body dies. This is the reason why your body is constantly striving to balance its pH – your life literally depends on it, and whether or not you will recover from your health condition depends on how healthy your pH level is.

A diet that is rich in acid producing foods such as sugar, coffee, processed foods and animal products will just put a ton of pressure on your body in regulating its pH. As your body tries to balance this out, it uses some of its own reserves of alkaline minerals such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium. It would be good if you are taking mineral supplements AND your body is well absorbing them (such is most often not the case for people with GERD or Acid Reflux).

If this coping mechanism continues, minerals are just taken away from your bones, blood, and other vital organs for the sake of neutralizing all the excess acid and removing it from your body. However, because you lose a great number of these minerals in the process, the trade-off is that you become more prone to chronic and degenerative diseases. These can come in the form of complications to your GERD or Acid Reflux.

The main thing to remember here is your body’s pH affects your entire state of health. So if you are suffering from such a condition already, it would be best to actively ensure that your pH level remains slightly alkaline, in order to fight off other diseases, keep your immune system up and running, and thereby giving you a greater chance to cure your GERD or Acid Reflux, and stop it from recurring. The best approach in treating this, as was in my case, is the natural way.
