First of all, if she thinks she has acid reflux, she needs to see the doctor. Acid reflux will errode the esophagus if it goes untreated. There are many good medications available that will help to correct the problem. This will keep her healthy and also allow her to eat the foods she wants to eat more often.

Acid reflux is also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). GERD occurs when stomach contents, which contain acid that the stomach produces to digest your food, move back up into the esophagus. The esophageal lining is not meant to be in contact with the high acid content of the stomach and gets chemically burned (thus the term “heartburn”). If GERD continues over a long period of time, it can cause permanent damage to the esophagus resulting in scarring and difficulty swallowing. Although certain foods, like spicy or high acid content foods, may make GERD feel worse, the reflux occurs with any food.

Another trigger of excess production of stomach acid is stress. The fact that her symptoms were better on vacation than when at work may indicate that this may be part of her problem.

If she has GERD, some people also note that it’s worse when lying down, may have an irritating cough that just won’t go away, or even experience a scratchy throat or horseness.

The first thing to do is to try an over the counter acid blocker, like Zantac or Pepcid AC. These work well at controlling the symptoms of gastritis, that burning stomach associated with stress. If no or incomplete relief, or the other signs of GERD are present, she should see her physician. The doc can evaluate her for other causes and if it is GERD, prescribe a proton pump inhibitor(that decreases the excess stoamch acid production greatly) like Nexium, “the purple pill”.

Some people need to sleep propped up with pillows or with the head of the bed higher than the foot. Foods to avoid include caffiene (coffee is the worst for me), alcohol, spicy or acidic foods (like orange juice, tomatoes, or Szechuan chinese dishes). Hope this helps.

Just as everyone else has said, she needs to see a doctor but that really wasn’t your question. . . . hehe.

And she can find an over counter medication.

But she should advoid anything that has acid in it. . . . like. . . . pineapple, Orange juice, mandran oranges, gratefruit, etc. I am sure the chinese hasn’t been helping, they usually put a lot of acid in it not to mention soy sauce.

If she wants to go all natural and not use “medication” then she can drink milk, its a natural way to get rid of stomach acid. Or if that isn’t cutting it, she can go to her local health food store and they will totally give her stuff to help her a long.

I wouldn’t suggest avoiding acid foods forever, she can certainly eat them every once and awhile, just not more then two times a week, and that stretching it.

    I hope I was helpful. =)

it could be some of the spices in the food. . . try some prilosec or zantac over the counter and see if that helps, if it doesn’t see the doc

Just about everything will disturb acid reflux. . . My husband says to drink a glass of milk when you’ve got a lot of acid going on (it neutralizes the acid), I tend to have worse acid reflux if I over eat or I eat late at night. The acid in your stomach tend to backwash in your stomach and that in return makes it seep out and back up into your throat. . . There are over the counter things that help, ask the pharmacist, he can usually guide you to something that relieves. .
