For decades I suffered from severe attacks of acid reflux and heartburn several times a week. Some years ago I started taking a daily supplement of 1,000 mg of magnesium chelated with other seemingly unrelated medical conditions. To my pleasant surprise the extra magnesium not only treat the disease was taking, also completely stopped my episodes of acid reflux and heartburn. Since then I learned that acid reflux is caused by spasms of the stomach causing acid (healthy stomachs that are designed by nature to support and use) to be expelled into the esophagus is not designed to be exposed to stomach acid and burn when it is so exposed. Magnesium is a natural relaxing – as a natural antacid – and thus helps to prevent stomach cramps that are the main cause of acid reflux and accompanying heartburn. I am a research chemist, not a doctor so I can not tell you how I take chelated magnesium. I can, however, the report that I have experienced the beneficial effects of daily supplementation of magnesium chelate. Those who are interested in learning the benefits of magnesium many others – including the prevention and mitigation of cardiac arrhythmia, high blood pressure, asthma, osteoporosis and diabetes – should acquire and read the excellent book by Dr. Carolyn Dean is the miracle of magnesium.
