GERD can be compared to a failure of the valve between the stomach and the food-pipe. This valve is due to many causes leak and allow fluid from the stomach (hydrochloric acid containing powerful digestive juices) to move to the feeder pipe and up into the mouth, causing a burning sensation in the chest and throat, and sometimes the pain of severe burns and the juice of the stomach through the internal walls of the food-pipe.
Definitive diagnosis requires ENDOSCOPY, 24 hour pH monitoring of the esophagus (feeding tube), also a study in contrast barium meal to show how the stomach contents back to the food-pipe.

I'll tell you a cheap practical way to know if your question indigestion is caused by gastroesophageal reflux or something else!
Simply take a syrup or antacid tablets when you feel the discomfort, if it gets better right away, then most likely, GORD!
